Aptly Autumn

IMG_20180820_160735_341.jpg

Yes, finally, that long hot summer ended (yes, I know it was lovely but I just can’t do sweaty heat) and the season of snuggly blankies is upon us once more (hurrah!) so my Yorkshire Dales Delight ripple stitch blanket has already been put to good use for sofa-snuggles…

IMG_20180820_162941_019.jpg

It was crocheted using Stylecraft’s dk yarn in shades of khaki, meadow, cypress, mocha and grape in a ripple stitch to echo the rise and fall of the delightful Dales. Of course once that little beauty was complete, I was straight on to the next…

IMG_20180826_155906_823.jpg

… another ripple blankie (oh I do love ripple stitch, can you tell?) this time very much on the theme of autumn leaves with a fiery palette of Stylecraft dk yarn in walnut, copper, spice and burgundy; Deramores’ mustard and paprika and finally King Cole’s amber. Love autumn…

IMG_20180916_132435_205.jpg

And yes, you’re right dear reader, as soon as that snugglesome beauty was finished yet another was begun: in autumnal woodland shades obviously…

IMG_20180929_163512_690.jpg

You can’t beat a good old granny square blanket, can you? I find them so therapeutic to work on as the nights draw in and I’m simply loving this combination of colours: parchment, copper, walnut, mocha and grey, all Stylecraft dk shades. It’s so very nearly finished so more pics next time! In a nod to Christmas, which is just around the corner, I have also been working on a festive-inspired granny blanket in Stylecraft shades of lipstick, bottle, meadow and cream…

IMG_20180820_182247_921.jpg

Isn’t it fabulously festive? I think the shades of yarn give it a somewhat vintage air too and I have to confess it really gets you into a Christmasy mood working on it; I can almost hear those sleigh bells jingling…

IMG_20180815_104326_322.jpg

Remember last September I sent a little crocheted charity contribution off to Yarn Dale in Yorkshire? Well, this year the theme was butterflies which were to be sold to raise funds for Pioneer Projects, a charity that helps those living with dementia, so I crocheted up a few for this jolly worthy cause…

IMG_20180815_102758_723.jpgIMG_20180815_103432_660.jpg

Let’s hope they helped to raise lots of donations for such a lovely charity.

IMG_20180826_155155_101.jpg

Yes, well spotted dear reader, the above pic does indeed show another block for my autumn colour block blanket, loosely based on Jo Allport ‘s mystery autumn blanket pattern in Knitting Magazine. I say loosely in a very loose sense, as I have completely changed all the colours and opted out of a few of the suggested stitch patterns, which had too many strands on the reverse, as I find them too easy to catch and pull on a blanket. The section above is block number 3, knitted using Stylecraft dk yarn in bottle (such a gorgeous jewel green) in a cosy cable stitch and I had quite forgotten how much I adore cabling, it is just so textural. Next on the needles was block number 4…

IMG_20180917_182944_406.jpg

… in a tweedy slip stitch weave pattern, using Stylecraft shades of walnut and mocha. Then came block number 5…

IMG_20180923_125321_352.jpg

… in a gorgeous gold shade using a beautiful basket weave stitch pattern. Next came block number 6…

IMG_20180929_151243_473.jpg

… a lingering lace pattern in copper, so divine. After that, block number 7 (I do hope you are managing to keep count dear reader)…

IMG_20181007_114811_091.jpg

…cables again (mmm…) this time in beautiful burgundy, so sumptuous. Block number 8 was to follow…

IMG_20181018_175329_923.jpg

..a rather festive Fair Isle number in gold and graphite. Following that one, block number 9…

IMG_20181022_101721_639.jpg

… in jolly juicy bramble Berry shades of bottle and burgundy using a textured stitch pattern and finally block number 10…

IMG_20181026_102815_426.jpg

… a cable cacophony in walnut, simply sublime. Once that one’s complete it will be time to join the bounty of blocks together in a pleasing ensemble ready for the border – ooh, the anticipation!

Well, I had better get back to my blanket, or should I say blankets? I will leave you with a few autumnal pics from my wanderings dear reader and remember: keep on crafting…

And So to Sew Squares…

IMG_20151122_162612

…and such a stack of them too! Yes, I’m sure you’ll be thrilled to know that I have finally finished knitting all the squares I needed to complete my cosy throw dear reader; all 63 of the little darlings! I thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with all the many stitch patterns I tried out and was actually a little sad to cast off the final square, as well as feeling a trifle daunted by the prospect of all that ‘sewing-together-of-squares’ scenario… Fear not dear reader chum! For I have summoned up a copious amount of courage to complete the trying task ahead of me ( along with lashings of tea and cake, of course).

Maybe it’s all the rain we’ve been having, but my doodlings have been feeling the blues of late, hence this little ink and watercolour paint piece I refer to as my ‘big blue blooms’…

IMG_20151122_165255

…and this one which is quite simply ‘blobby blue blobs’ (self-explanatory really)…

IMG_20151122_165626

In an attempt to cheer my sketchbook up, I created a little festive cheer with a seasonal sketch of one of my favourite birds:the robin…

IMG_20151122_164020

A little cutie, is he not? Bless his adorable red breast; doesn’t he just warm the cockles of your heart, dear reader chum? And I did so enjoy having my colouring pencils out for a play again, so much so that I dabbled with a dash of colouring-in, with my new grown-up colouring-in book on nature…
IMG_20151122_162922

A rather restrained and ‘grown-up’ start by me on the title page, but on the next page I just went wild with an exotic explosion of crazy colours because that’s how I roll and it is my colouring book after all…

IMG_20151122_163259
Now I definately feel like I have released my inner child with a nostalgic childhood pastime. Well, I can’t hang around here passing time with you dear reader, no matter how endearing your company is, for I have a skyscraper of a stack of squares to sew together, so I can have my cosy throw ready for snuggling up in once that frosty-chilly cold snap arrives! And sew on and sew on…

Falling For Autumn

IMG_20151019_173105

A happy-hello to you dear reader chum! Here’s hoping my latest bloggy post finds you full of autumn cheer; for who can fail to smile at the gorgeous array of jewel shades adorning the trees right now? Whilst wandering in the crisp air of the chilly outdoors, I am always foraging for little seasonal treasures to bring home, rather like a large squirrel, except I don’t eat the items of course, they are purely for display as you can see in the pics above and below…

IMG_20151019_173549

I have also collected together some rather sumptuously earthy, autumnal shades of yarn, which are just crying out to be knitted into a cosy cowl of some description. I’m thinking stripes of alternating shades using different stitch patterns, we shall see…

IMG_20151019_171250

Currently, I am knitting a skinny scarf in a gorgeous coppery-brown shade of cotton yarn, in a lovely lace stitch…

IMG_20151019_170203

This also has a scattering of tiny pearl seed beads knitted into the cast-on edge (which you can’t see in the picture, unfortunately) and this will be repeated for the cast-off edge as well. I’m just loving knitting a lace stitch once again and the yarn has such a beautiful sheen to it too, much like a burnished brown autumnal oak leaf.

As for crochet, well one of my darling daughters requested a ‘granny-square-type-dreamcatchery-thingy-in-earthy-natural-colours-with-driftwood-and-tassels-and-stuff-you-know?’ so I came up with this…

IMG_20151019_165741

It ended up on the wall by her bed, so I am assuming it was just as she ordered- phew! I also had a go at the freebie little loom kit from Mollie Makes magazine, which was also claimed by said darling daughter with a quick: “Mine!” once I’d finished it…

IMG_20151019_172422

My cosy throw is coming along well, as I am still busy knitting many, many (many) squares in various shades of grey and in many, many (many) different stitch patterns…

IMG_20151019_1707558

I just adore experimenting with new stitch patterns and have found the Deramores blog a super source of unique ones. Well I’m off forthwith for a brew and a little taste of Christmas: mini stollen bites, mmm…

IMG_20151008_200423

I will wish you a happy Halloweeny time dear reader, just don’t get too spooked…
